The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is a tourist mecca, but backpacking overnight into the canyon offers both a break from the crowds and a fabulous way to experience the Grand Canyon’s remarkable beauty.
The Hermit Loop takes you through a remote section Below Rim, with a secluded night on the banks of the Colorado River at stunning Granite Rapids, with giant cliffs towering above. Spend your second night at lush Indian Garden after catching a stunning sunset from the infamous Plateau Point.
LEVEL 5 TRIP: This is a tough trip with 4000 ft of elevation gain and loss. Participants should be in excellent physical condition, and able to hike up 12-15 miles a day, in steep terrain, carrying 35-40lbs.
A Special Note about Booking a Grand Canyon Backpacking Trip:
The Grand Canyon has a unique permit process. We will close registration for this trip 5 months before departure to accommodate that permitting process. We recommend not booking your travel to AZ until we have confirmed your itinerary, 3 months prior to the trip start.
We are planning on backpacking the Hermit Loop, but we have several alternate (but equally beautiful) destinations we may travel to, based on the permits we secure.
If you have any questions about registering for the Grand Canyon, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
