Solo Backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail
Angela, a recent custom-trip client, is starting a long solo journey on the trail today, and I wanted to reflect on our time together on the trail.
Angela’s 3-night custom trip was focused on getting her prepared to tackle several sections of the Superior Hiking Trail over a 2-week period, which she is bravely doing solo.
We, as women, are bombarded with messages about how we can’t do these kinds of things: We shouldn’t travel alone. We aren’t strong enough for long-distance treks. We should prioritize being at home with our families, instead of following our passions.
Angela is courageous, curious, and strong, having participated in marathons all over the globe. She already has the physical capabilities to take this challenge on. All she needed was some confidence in herself, and a tune-up of her trail skills to help her adapt to the unique aspects of solo-backpacking.
Out of the gate, she is planning on some 18-mile days. This is no small feat, even for an experienced backpacker. Now, with her upgraded knowledge and experience, it comes down to mental stamina and physical conditioning outside of her own, familiar comfort zones.
This is my greatest reward: I love helping people become empowered in the outdoors. Especially women!
I know Angela will test her personal limits, but she will inevitably succeed. I simply cannot wait to track her progress on the trail!
I love my life as a guide and backpacking instructor. ❣️ Go, Angela!!
